The multi-purpose hall of Country Women Association of Nigeria (COWAN), Plateau State Chapter, Sabon Barki, Jos, came alive on Friday 8th May 2026 when Staff, Farmers, the Media and other stakeholders in the agricultural sector of Plateau State converged for a virtual workshop facilitated by HEDA Resource Centre in collaboration with Nigerian Meteorological Agency on the topic: Downscaling of the 2026 Seasonal Climate Prediction.

In a presentation that lasted a few hours, the 2026 planting season for Plateau State among other states of Nigeria was the focus; stating days that are most suitable for planting of crops such as maize, rice, soya beans and livestock breeding. The planting window for maize on the Plateau is open between 25th May and 15th July, while for Rice falls between 10th June and 20th July.

The planting window for soya beans for 2026 falls between 10th June and 30th July, while harvest is anticipated by 18th October. There may be heatstroke between March and May for livestock, but from September to December, there is no likelihood of discomfort for livestock.

The rainfall season prediction awareness ended with questions from journalists, and responses from the facilitators, prepared the minds of stakeholders in the agricultural sector for a bountiful farming season ahead. Kudos to COWAN for agricultural initiatives such as the Small Holder Women Farmers with support from OxFam GB, JDPC and NAWIA which has led to increase in the productivity and diversification of women in business and agriculture, hence boosting food production, income, and improvement in their likelihood.
