A fire broke out on Wednesday morning, February 04, 2026, in the Gwarandok community of Jos South Local Government Area, Plateau State, destroying a residential house.
The fire started at about 10am and quickly spread through the building, burning down household items and leaving the occupants without a place to stay.

People in the area said they saw thick smoke rising from the house as the fire spread fast, possibly because there were flammable items inside. The cause of the fire is still unknown as till this moment.
No one was injured, but residents say the incident has raised fresh concerns about fire safety in the community.

Community members tried to put out the fire using buckets and other available tools, but their efforts failed due to serious water shortage in the area. Residents blamed the problem on an ongoing road construction project that has damaged water supply lines and cut off access to nearby water sources.

One of the residents, Jenifer Solomon, said the lack of water supply in the community made the situation worse. “This water problem turned a small fire into a big disaster,” she said.
She appealed to Plateau State Governor, Caleb Mutfwang, to help the community by completing the road project, which she said has been abandoned for over a year. Due to the paused road project, water pipelines were disconnected.

According to her, the fire service was quickly informed and arrived with water tankers and firefighting equipment. The firefighters were able to stop the fire and prevent it from spreading to nearby houses.

Another resident, Mr. Adams Olayinka, also called on the government to complete the road project urgently, especially before the rainy season begins.
