FRSC Foils Suspected Child Trafficking in Nyanya, Rescues 17 Children

The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) has intercepted a suspected child trafficking operation in Nyanya, Abuja, rescuing 17 children and handing over the suspect to the Nigeria Police Force for further investigation.

The interception occurred on Saturday, January 17, 2026, when officers of the FRSC Nyanya Unit Command stopped a white Sharon vehicle with registration number SHD 253 YU during a routine patrol at the Building Materials axis of Nyanya.

According to the FRSC, officers became suspicious after observing that the vehicle was conveying an unusually large number of passengers. A search of the vehicle revealed 17 young boys and girls, with two minors reportedly concealed in the boot, raising concerns of possible human trafficking.

The driver, identified as Mr. Nanle John, 36, was said to be traveling from Shendam, Plateau State, to Kaiama Local Government Area of Kwara State. His explanations regarding the movement of the children were described as inconsistent and unsatisfactory.

Following the interception, the vehicle was impounded and the case was reported to the Divisional Police Officer (DPO), Mararaba Division. The driver, the vehicle, and the children were subsequently handed over to the Nigeria Police Force.

The Commissioner of Police, Nasarawa State Command, CP Shetima Jauro Mohamed, later ordered that the rescued children be taken to the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID), Lafia, where they are currently in protective custody, while investigations continue to uncover any trafficking network linked to the case.

Authorities say investigations are ongoing as security agencies intensify efforts to combat child trafficking and protect vulnerable persons across the country.
